Empowering Stroke Survivors Together (ESST) Project
Swansea Mind’s ESST project for stroke survivors is an initiative aimed at addressing the complex emotional and psychological challenges that often arise after a stroke.
The project focuses on various aspects of mental health and wellbeing, specifically targeting issues that stroke survivors may experience.
This can include:
- Anxiety and Panic Attacks: The project provides tools and strategies to help manage anxiety and reduce the frequency and intensity of panic attacks. This includes techniques such as mindfulness, breathing exercises, and cognitive behavioural approaches.
- Coping with Grief and Loss: Stroke survivors often face significant changes in their lives, which can lead to feelings of grief and loss, not just related to physical abilities but also to lifestyle changes. The project offers support in navigating these emotions, helping individuals to process their feelings and find pathways to acceptance and adjustment.
- Loneliness and Feeling Alone: Social isolation is a common issue for stroke survivors, leading to feelings of loneliness. The project encourages social engagement and provides opportunities for peer support, helping individuals connect with others who understand their experiences.
- Low Self-Esteem: Stroke can impact self-esteem due to changes in physical abilities or dependence on others. The project works to rebuild confidence and self-worth through positive reinforcement, goal setting, and celebrating small achievements.
- Low Mood and Depression: Depression is a frequent consequence of stroke. The project offers resources for recognising signs of depression and managing low mood through therapeutic techniques, peer support, and, if necessary, guidance towards professional help.
- Managing Anger: Stroke survivors may experience increased irritability or anger, which can stem from frustration or changes in brain function. The project provides anger management strategies, including identifying triggers, using relaxation techniques, and developing healthy outlets for emotions.
- Managing Stress: Stress can exacerbate both physical and emotional challenges post-stroke. The project teaches stress management techniques such as relaxation exercises, time management, and problem-solving skills to help reduce the overall impact of stress.
- Understanding Menopause: For some stroke survivors, menopause can add another layer of complexity to their recovery. The project offers information and support to help manage menopause symptoms and understand their impact on stroke recovery and overall wellbeing.
Through these focused areas, Swansea Mind’s ESST project aims to empower stroke survivors to manage their mental health more effectively, improve their quality of life, and foster resilience in the face of ongoing challenges.
